Papa Paolo Contis, engaged na kay Lian

EB Babe Lian reveals engagement with Paolo Contis

EB Babe Lian Paz and boyfriend Paolo Contis are now engaged. Paz herself revealed the engagement on Sunday while in the hot seat of “Intriga Crossfire,” the latest segment of GMA’s weekly entertainment program, “Showbiz Central.” Asked by host Raymond Gutierrez what the most treasured gift Contis had ever given her, Paz held up her hand to show a diamond ring: “This ring.” So how did Contis go about asking for her hand? “Marry me, babe,” Paz quoted Contis as saying. According to Paz, Contis gave her the ring to “prove that he’s serious about the two of us.” “So, I said, yes,” Paz added. During the interrogation, Paz also disclosed how their controversial relationship began, denying that she caused the breakup between Contis and his long-time girlfriend Isabelle Oli. “It started noon maaksidente ako [It started when I met an accident]. So I texted Kuya Gorgy,” she said. But Gorgy, who was supposed to text the network’s newsroom to ask for assistance, accidentally sent Contis the message. Contis, whom friends consider a gentleman, went to Paz and helped her out. Paz also disclosed that rumors blaming her for the “Contis-Oli” break up made her feel “sad and depressed.” She also said that’s not the real reason and people should not judge. She, however, said that she would respect other people’s opinion.

LPG problems, Manny Villar to the rescue

– GMANews.TV

Help our stranded OFW

RP posts told: Seek amnesty for stranded OFWs

02/11/2009

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine embassies and consular offices in the Middle East should make vigorous representation with host governments and seek amnesty for distressed, stranded, and overstaying OFWs, a group of migrant workers said on Wednesday.

“It is now imperative for all Philippine posts abroad especially in the Middle East to work for amnesty for stranded and distressed OFWs and it could possibly be done via diplomatic way,” said John Leonard Monterona, regional coordinator of Migrante – Middle East.

Migrante’s appeal followed an advisory by the Philippine consulate general in Jeddah for Filipinos to avoid unscrupulous groups or individuals offering shortcuts in leaving Saudi Arabia.

Consul General Ezzedin Tago said in his appeal that OFWs who wish to leave should not fall for offers of immediate repatriation for a fee because the Saudi government has no existing amnesty offer.

If ever there is an amnesty offer, it would only be for those who overstayed their umrah, or haj visas, he said. He explained that workers who left their employers are not covered by such amnesties and they could end up languishing in deportation centers while local authorities check on their records.

Ambassador Antonio P. Villamor has also repeatedly issued similar advisories in Riyadh.

Migrante has noted an increasing numbers of stranded and overstaying OFWs in the Middle East, the latest addition of which include 37 who have camped out under the Khandara overpass in Jeddah in hopes of being rounded up by the immigration police for immediate deportation.

“According to our Migrante-Jeddah chapter, the numbers of distressed OFWs in Khandara bridge swell to about 100 during day time. It is to their observation that there are a considerable numbers out there,” Monterona added.

Monterona said that while it was well for Philippine mission officials to keep reminding OFWs against absconding from their work and to abide by the laws of host countries, it was also incumbent on the missions to assist OFWs in distress. And one way of assisting distressed or overstaying OFWs is to work for an amnesty program.

“We would like to remind our diplomatic officials that many of the distressed and stranded OFWs are victims of labor malpractices, nonpayment of salaries, overworked, and sexual and physical abuses committed against them by their employers, thus they abscond from their abusive employers,” Monterona said.

“That is why RP posts abroad are their to protect the interests of OFWs, and represents OFWs interests in relation to the host government’s internal or immigration policies,” he added.

Pro-active measures

Monterona said if absconding is a crime in most of the Middle Eastern countries, Philippine diplomats must not think and treat them that way, but instead provide them swift assistance for the early resolution of their cases.

“Our distressed OFWs who are often caught between the devil and deep blue sea would choose to be apprehended by immigration police, hoping for their eventual repatriation,” he added.

“That is why pro-active actions and measures must be taken by our diplomatic officials, first to swiftly approach distressed, stranded and overstaying OFWs especially those in Khandara bridge to get their names, make a list and record their respective cases, and push for a possible amnesty deal for their repatriation,” Monterona said.

He said it’s not really impossible to secure an amnesty program from the host countries, including the government of Saudi Arabia.

He cited what happened in 2007 when the Saudi Arabia granted amnesty to 925 overstayers and mostly runaway OFWs or those facing labor cases after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Manila ordered the consulate in Jeddah to make representations with Saudi authorities.

Then Consul General Pendosina N. Lomondot not only made official representations but also tapped personal friends among Saudi immigration, labor and foreign affairs officials.

Armed with a blanket authority by the national government, Saudi officials allowed even those who had labor cases to leave the kingdom, all at the expense of their own government. - GMANews.TV

Facebook wants $3.7B

Facebook appraisal pegs company’s value at $3.7B

02/12/2009 | 09:56 AM

SAN FRANCISCO – Facebook Inc. quickly concluded it wasn’t worth anywhere near the $15 billion market value implied in a 2007 investment made by Microsoft Corp., according to confidential information obtained Wednesday from court documents.

In a transcript of a June court hearing that was closed to the public, lawyers arguing over a legal settlement revealed Facebook’s own appraisal had priced its privately held stock at $8.88 per share, giving it a market value of about $3.7 billion.

The Palo Alto-based company relied on the appraisal to value employee stock options fairly and avert possible tax problems.

Facebook, which runs the Internet’s largest social network, made the assessment after striking an October 2007 deal with Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft. As part of a broader advertising partnership with Microsoft, Facebook agreed to sell a 1.6 percent stake to the software maker for $240 million.

The Microsoft investment implied Facebook’s stock was worth $35.90 per share — a figure that was relied upon in the settlement of a lawsuit that accused the company’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, of stealing the idea for his online hangout from three former classmates who started another social network called ConnectU.

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt declined to comment on any of the figures obtained from the court documents. Microsoft had no immediate comment.

In last June’s court hearing, Facebook’s lawyers argued the company’s appraisal of its common stock couldn’t be held up as an apples-to-apples comparison with the Microsoft investment because the software maker bought Series D preferred stock. Microsoft also had an incentive to pay a premium for Facebook’s stock because it wanted to deepen its ties to the company’s popular Web site, whose worldwide audience of 150 million people could eventually attract billions of dollars in advertising.

Analysts believe Facebook generated somewhere between $250 million and $300 million in revenue last year.

Lawyers opposing Facebook said the company cited the $35.90 per share figure in the settlement negotiations.

Zuckerberg’s former classmates — Divya Narendra and twins Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss — balked at settling the case last March after learning Facebook determined its common stock was worth about one-fourth of the value derived from Microsoft’s investment.

US District Judge James Ware decided to enforce the settlement despite ConnectU’s contention that it had been misled about the true value of Facebook’s stock.

ConnectU’s resistance to the settlement triggered widespread speculation about how much Facebook’s stock is really worth.

Facebook fought fiercely to keep the details of its market value and the ConnectU settlement under wraps. Before last June’s hearing, Facebook lawyers persuaded Ware to remove reporters from a San Jose courtroom so the final details could be hashed out in private.

Large portions of that hearing are redacted in a transcript of the June hearing, but The Associated Press was able to read the blacked-out portions by copying from an electronic version of the document and pasting the results into another document.

Under their settlement, Facebook agreed to pay ConnectU $20 million in cash and 1,253,326 shares of common stock. The stock was worth $45 million, based on the Microsoft valuation, but only $11 million under Facebook’s own appraisal.

That means ConnectU received anywhere from $31 million and $65 million for settling the suit, depending on which stock valuation is used.

Facebook’s stock probably is worth even less now because of a severe recession that has decimated the values of companies around the globe.

The $65 million settlement amount has been reported in the media this week, based on information that was inadvertently leaked by a law firm that represented ConnectU in the case against Facebook.

The firm, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges, boasted about the $65 million figure in a newsletter that was obtained this week by The Recorder, a legal publication.

ConnectU fired Quinn Emanuel before Ware signed off on the Facebook settlement. - AP

For the “Love”, or for the “Money”?

Many Filipinas marry foreigners for money, not love

CHERYL ARCIBAL, GMANews.TV
MANILA, Philippines- The inability of the Philippine economy to produce high-paying jobs especially for women has pushed Filipinos to marry foreigners as a way to provide for their families, the study Country Gender Assessment by regional lender Asian Development Bank said.

The number of Filipinos marrying foreigners have also tripled in just a span of eight years from 7,819 in 1998 to 24,954 in 2006.

It is also estimated that currently, 300,000 Filipinos, 92 percent of whom are women, are married to foreigners mainly from the United States, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Korea.

“(I)n the Philippines (as elsewhere), the phenomenon of ‘mail order brides’ is not uncommon. In the absence of employment prospects and with families to care for, many women view marrying a foreigner as an easy ticket to an overseas life with steady remittances. With the advent of the Internet, chat rooms, and text messaging the marriage migration numbers are on the rise,” the ADB said.

Data from The Commission on Filipinos Overseas showed that Filipino women marrying men from East Asian countries tend to be younger and less educated. These foreign men also usually are at least 40 years older than their Filipino brides.

“Reports indicate that more women apply for ‘marriage visas’ to Japan as a result of Japan reducing its official demand for entertainers,” ADB said.

In 2005 Japan has imposed a stricter immigration policy following Tokyo’s inclusion in a US watchlist of high incidence of human smuggling.

ADB said Manila should undertake measures to protect Filipino women as those who marry foreigners that they do not know face enormous risks.

“Many of the men live in remote areas and are unsuccessful with women from their own culture, who they feel are spoiled and have too many freedoms. Instead, they want women with ‘traditional’ family values who, once in the country, have nowhere to turn and are completely at their mercy,” ADB said.

Among the recommendations of the ADB was to tap remittances from overseas Filipinos for productive investment and sustainable livelihood opportunities for women so that migration becomes a choice rather than a necessity. - GMANews.TV

Well, this has been going on since the late 90′s even in the 80′s kaso penpal system. The snail mail was popular in those days, madali lang ang puhunan sa paghahanap ng “porenger” ngayon. Like I said in “Conclusion in Subic Rape Case” , for as low as 10, 15 per hour naka-chat ka na, may webcam ka pa. Bonnga! Diba? :D With matching headset, no need to type. Talk real-time, sosi!

IMO lang it’s not just the economy, habang tumatagal nagiging less educated kasi ang mga pinoy, less ‘masipag’. Ang daming tambay na kabataan ngayon, worse, they populate the society becoming the “decay” of the community.

I can’t say it’s because of the Philippine Economy, hell, ang dami pa din nakakapag MALL ano. Find ways to provide something to their homes kahit ang tataas na ng presyo ng bilihin. If i’m not mistaken, mas marami pa ata ngayon ang kumakain sa Jollibee, McDonalds at kung saan saan pang fast food.

Filipinos should really educate themselves, not just get it from school. Iilan na lang din ang umaalam ng current events. Try asking students nowadays, and see if I’m wrong.

A conclusion to “US-PH relationship put to the test”, A look back at the Subic rape case

MANILA, Philippines – The celebrated Subic rape case that caused sharp political division in the Philippines had stood out among other VFA-related cases in the country.Lawyer Evalyn Ursua, the rape victim’s lawyer, had described the conviction of Lance Cpl. Daniel Smith as “precedent-setting.” Experts were convinced the case could somehow prevent abuses by US servicemen coming to the Philippines.

Smith was found guilty of rape on Dec. 4 and sentenced to 40 years in prison. The case has tested relations between the Philippines and the United States and challenged the validity of the VFA (the Visiting Forces Agreement), which governs the conduct of US troops in the Philippines.

In the case Smith, it would seem that justice has been served – albeit on appeal at the Supreme Court, following Philippine legal procedure.

And that has been the problem, at least as far as Filipino supporters of Nicole are concerned. For them, it would seem that justice has been put on hold, for as long as Smith remains in custody of the US Embassy, under an agreement signed by Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and US Ambassador Kristie Kenney.

On Wednesday (Feb. 11), the Supreme Court voided that agreement for not being in accordance with the VFA, the mutual defense agreement signed by the Philippines and the US in 1999.

The court ruled that Smith be placed under Philippine custody. But in practical terms, the status quo remains because the court allowed Smith to remain at the embassy until the governments of both countries can cut a new deal on the details of Smith’s turnover.

GMA News Research has compiled court records and other materials on Smith’s trial. Below are the links to the documents of the celebrated Subic rape case:

Twilight Movie?! … Not!

We were youtubing like the usual, and we found this Twilight Movie Bloopers.

Guys behind this deserve a big ho-ho-hooray!

The movie Twilight, if you haven’t seen it (or know it) is a movie based on the book “Twilight” by Stephenie Meyer. (I hope she’s not related to Jason Mraz as they contradict what they do in life. Jason Mraz makes happy songs, while Stephenie Meyer makes sad vampire novels).

The two main of characters in the book are:

Isabella “Bella” Swan
Edward Cullen (Bella’s lover, a vampire)

Edward Cullen and his family drinks only blood of animals to satisfy their vampiric hunger, whereas Edward eventually became addictive to Bella’s scent and blood. He controlled his vampiric hunger, in which Bella found out the truth and they fall in love.

So much for the movie, I liked the novel way better than the movie.

And this blooper is better than the movie.

Advance Happy Hearts Day to all!

Stranded Dolphins in Bataan waters

MANILA, Philippines – The hundreds of melon-headed whales stranded earlier off the coastal area of Pilar town in Bataan province have likely found their way into the open seas, governor Enrique Garcia, Jr. said Tuesday afternoon.

In a telephone interview with GMANews.TV, Garcia said as of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, there were no more sightings of the dolphins off the coastal areas of Hermosa and Mariveles towns near Pilar.

“Mino-monitor ko yung mga dolphins [melon-headed whales] from the helicopter. The whole coastline fronting Hermosa to Mariveles, they had no sightings. Wala na. Hopefully, nasa open seas na,” Garcia said.

[I have been monitoring the movements of the melon-headed whales from a helicopter and there are no sightings of the creatures from the whole coastline fronting Hermosa and Mariveles. Hopefully, they are now on open seas.]

A statement from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Tuesday quoted Commodore Luis Tuazon, Coast Guard Metro Manila – Central Luzon District commander – as saying that some 400 to 500 melon-headed whales were spotted off Pilar town about 4 a.m. Tuesday.

About three whales were reported dead.

In the interview, Garcia said authorities have yet to identify what caused the whales’ deaths. He also said Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) officials are still determining what could have caused the whales’ “stranding.”

Garcia added that the PCG’s search and rescue vessels are still patrolling the coastal areas to spot others which may not have joined the pod in the open sea.

“Yung coast guard, nandoon pa yung kanilang patrol boat. Yung BFAR, sabi nga ni Director [Malcolm] Sarmiento, they are still conducting an investigation,” Garcia said.

Sarmiento had earlier said a sea quake or a disturbance could have damaged the whales’ eardrums and sense of balance, causing them to be “disoriented” on their navigational patterns.

Garcia said that on Wednesday, authorities will scour the coastal areas anew to monitor similar occurences. He added that Environment Secretary Lito Atienza had also called for a meeting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday to discuss the incident.

According to WikiPedia, the Melon-headed Whale (Peponocephala electra; other names are many-toothed blackfish and electra dolphin) is a cetacean of the oceanic dolphin family (Delphinidae). It is closely related to the Pygmy Killer Whale and Pilot Whale, and collectively these dolphin species are known by the common name blackfish. The Melon-headed Whale is widespread throughout the world’s tropical waters, although not often seen by humans on account of its preference for deep water. – Sophia Dedace, GMANews.TV

Looking stupid on tube nowadays is a trend, generation x is really a reverse world. Don’t you think?
I have nothing against these guys, hey we have our very own, the infamous “Moymoy Palaboys”. Three to five decades ago, you need “uber talent” to be really famous. Now, you have to have almost “zero talent” to be famour.

And you need not to lack is a huge load of guts. :)

and yeah, here’s the freakin` lyrics. Compare!

MC, uh, uh, uh In the place to be
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

I know that you’ve been waiting for it
I’m waiting too
In my imagination I’d be all up on you
I know you got that fever for me
Hundred and two
And boy I know I feel the same
My temperature’s through the roof

If there’s a camera up in here
Then it’s gonna leave with me
When I do (I do)
If there’s a camera up in here
Then I’d best not catch this flick
On YouTube (YouTube)
‘Cuz if you run your mouth and brag

I will hunt you down
‘Cuz they be all up in my business
Like a Wendy interview
But this is private
Between you and I

Touch my body
Put me on the floor
Wrestle me around
Play with me some more
Touch my body
Throw me on the bed
I just wanna make you feel
Like you never did.
Touch my body
Let me wrap my thighs
All around your waist
Just a little taste
Touch my body
Know you like my curves
Come on and give me what I deserve
And touch my body.

Boy you can put me on you
Like a brand new white tee
I’ll hug your body tighter
Than my favorite jeans
I want you to caress me
Like a tropical breeze
And float away with you
In the Caribbean Sea

If there’s a camera up in here
Then it’s gonna leave with me
When I do (I do)
If there’s a camera up in here

Then I’d best not catch this flick
